Oilers pip Red Wings in day of upsets

02/05/2012 06:36:52 AM

The Edmonton Oilers shocked the NHL-leading Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, while the Ottawa Senators lost again.

Inspired by Sam Gagner, who had the first eight-point game in the NHL in more than 23 years on Thursday, the Oilers recorded a 5-4 shootout win against the Red Wings.

Gagner scored twice and had an assist in the first period, but the Red Wings worked their way back into the match.

A brace from Todd Bertuzzi and Drew Miller's goal had them ahead in the third period, only for Jordan Eberle to force overtime with 39 seconds to play.

Gagner and Bertuzzi exchanged shootout goals, before Ryan Nugent-Hopkins netted what proved to be the winner.

Elsewhere, goalie James Reimer stopped 49 shots as the Toronto Maple Leafs thrashed the out-of-form Ottawa Senators, who slumped to a sixth consecutive loss in a 5-0 defeat.

Right wing Martin St Louis bagged a hat-trick to guide the Tampa Bay Lightning to a comfortable 6-3 win over the Southeast Division-leading Florida Panthers.

Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury earned his ninth straight win, making 28 saves as the Pittsburgh Penguins edged Northeast Division leaders the Boston Bruins 2-1.

The New Jersey Devils held off the fast-finishing Philadelphia Flyers to record a 6-4 win, while Kevin Bieksa equalised with 35 seconds remaining before the Vancouver Canucks took a 3-2 shootout win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Nashville Predators shot-stopper Pekka Rinne collected his 11th straight victory as his side recorded a 3-1 win over the St Louis Blues.

The Buffalo Sabres came from behind to secure a 4-3 shootout victory against the New York Islanders, while Tomas Vokoun's 30-save shutout led the Washington Capitals to a 3-0 victory against the Montreal Canadiens.

In other games, the Dallas Stars had a 2-1 shootout win at home to the Minnesota Wild, the Carolina Hurricanes overcame the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 and Finn Lauri Korpikoski's double led the Phoenix Coyotes to a 5-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks.
