NHL: Pietrangelo wins it for Blues

NHL: Pietrangelo wins it for Blues

01/20/2012 08:05:28 AM

The St Louis Blues made it two consecutive shutouts and 14 straight wins at home with a 1-0 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday.

Alex Pietrangelo scored the game's only goal with a little over five minutes remaining and Jaroslav Halak made 15 saves.

St Louis have lost just once in 2012 and boast an NHL-best 20-3-3 at home to trail only the Detroit Red Wings after they defeated the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2 in a shootout win.

The Red Wings moved a point ahead of both St Louis and the New York Rangers to take sole leadership of the NHL after Todd Bertuzzi scored the only goal of the shootout after regulation time ended 2-2.

Bertuzzi had put the Red Wings ahead 2-1 in the second period before Gilbert Brule levelled proceedings for the Coyotes.

The Rangers missed their chance to keep pace and go top of the NHL with a 4-1 loss away to the red-hot Pittsburgh Penguins.

Richard Park finished a crisp three-way passing move to put the Penguins up 2-1 in the third before Evgeni Malkin put the gloss on the win with a late double.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 30 saves in his 19th straight game for Pittsburgh.

The Boston Bruins overturned a half-time deficit with a four-goal third period to defeat the New Jersey Devils 4-1.

Nathan Horton and Gregory Campbell scored within 35 seconds and Andrew Ference and Chris Kelly added the others.

The New York Islanders snapped an eight-game losing streak in style with a 4-1 win over Philadelphia. Josh Bailey, Matt Moulson, Mark Streit and Michael Grabner scored to break a long drought that had seen the Flyers win 23 of the past 24 games between the sides, including the past 13.

The Winnipeg Jets handed the Buffalo Sabres an 11th straight loss in a 4-1 win.

Pekka Rinne kept out 38 shots for his fourth shutout of the season to help the Nashville Predators to a 3-0 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. It was the Predators' ninth win in 11 games.

The Toronto Maple Leafs continued the scoring trend with a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild. Phil Kessel scored his 25th goal of the season.

The Calgary Flames edged the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 in overtime while the Ottawa Senators dished out the sixth 4-1 scoreline on Thursday to defeat the San Jose Sharks.
