Kookaburras make final

03/11/2010 07:46:14 PM

The Kookaburras will meet Germany in the 2010 Hockey World Cup final after they defeated The Netherlands 2-1 in the semi-finals in New Delhi on Friday morning.

Goals from Luke Doerner and Glenn Turner were enough to give Australia a crack at its first title since 1986 and second overall.

The Kookaburras will also be out to deny the Germans an unprecedented hat-trick of World Cup victories having been crowned champions in 2002 and 2006 when they beat Australia in the final on both occasions.

And the Kookaburras will have cause to be confident heading into the decider after they beat Germany 5-3 in the final of the Champions Trophy held in Melbourne late last year.

Doerner opened the scoring against the Dutch in the 27th minute when he made good the first penalty corner of the match to register his seventh goal of the tournament.

Australia would take its 1-0 advantage into the break.

Turner then doubled the Kookaburras' lead to 2-0 in the 55th minute after catching The Netherlands goalkeeper off guard.

Ned Taekema grabbed a goal back for the Dutch three minutes later to make it 2-1 and that's how the score would stay.

Germany progressed to the final after accounting for England 4-1 in their semi-final encounter.

Jan-Marco Montag, Oliver Korn, Martin Haner and Linus Butt were the goalscorers for the victors while Richard Smith was the sole player to get on the score sheet for the English.
