Gagner stars for pumped-up Oilers

02/03/2012 08:24:08 AM

Sam Gagner starred to see the Edmonton Oilers to a NHL win, while the Detroit Red Wings extended their lead atop the Western Conference.

Gagner, 22, had the first eight-point game - four goals and as many assists - in the NHL in more than 23 years as the Oilers upset the Chicago Blackhawks 8-4 on Thursday (local time).

He became the 11th player in NHL history to achieve the feat, joining the likes of greats Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey.

The Oilers are bottom of the Northwest Division despite the win, while the Blackhawks are sixth in the Western Conference after four consecutive losses.

Elsewhere, the Red Wings moved four points clear atop the Western Conference with a 4-3 shootout win against the Vancouver Canucks.

Right wing Daniel Cleary scored and had an assist in regulation time, before Pavel Datsyuk and Jiri Hudler netted in the shootout.

Goaltender Cam Ward produced a stunning 47-save shutout to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-0 win against reigning Stanley Cup champions the Boston Bruins.

Sitting bottom of the Eastern Conference, the Hurricanes are playing for pride to finish the season.

Eric Staal, Tuomo Ruutu and Brandon Sutter netted for the Hurricanes against the Bruins, who are second in the East.

The New Jersey Devils were forced into a come-from-behind 5-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens.

Down 3-1 early in the second period, the Devils rallied before David Clarkson's double and goals from Dainius Zubrus and Zach Parise helped them to the win.

The Nashville Predators saw their winning streak ended at five as they suffered a 4-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, who had right wing Wayne Simmonds score twice.

Niklas Backstrom made 37 saves to lead the Minnesota Wild to a physical 1-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

In other games, the Winnipeg Jets recorded a 2-1 overtime win against the Tampa Bay Lightning and the San Jose Sharks overcame the Dallas Stars 5-2.
