Reigning ASP world champion Mick Fanning remains in the hunt for his first title of the year after the Australian advanced to the fourth round of the Billabong Pro Tahiti on Wednesday.
Fanning, who has slipped to No.6 in the world following consecutive ninths in the past two events, was back to his best as he defeated Tamaro McComb 14.50 to 6.83.
Despite trailing championship leader Jordy Smith by over 9000 points, Fanning still remains confident of challenging for the title.
"It's still early days," Fanning said. "I'm holding a couple throwaways already this season so I need to start looking at putting in results."
"It's not all that different to last season really. Anyone can get on a roll at any time and put a few events away."
"I just need to stay focused on each heat and surf my best."
Fanning will now face off against Damien Hopgood in the fourth round after the American eliminated Brazilian Marco Polo.
There was no such joy for Aussies Matt Wilkinson and Chris Davidson who were knocked out by Hawaiin Andy Irons and American Patrick Gudauskas respectively.
ASP Dream Team rookie Gudauskas provided the highlight of the day when he executed an incredible 'Rodeo Flip' in the dying moments of his win over Davidson.
"It was really tough out there," Gudauskas said. "There weren't a lot of waves coming through and I didn't know if I should wait for the good ones or if there were even any good ones left."
"I knew I needed to go big at the end there so I thought, 'whatever, I'll just try this'."
"It had a really nice section and when I came out of the rotation, I knew I had it so I just kind of rode out and gave the judges a little thumbs up."
