Australian figure skater Cheltzie Lee has recovered from a fall during her routine on Thursday night (Vancouver time) to notch another personal best at the Winter Olympics in an event dominated by South Korea's Kim Yu-Na.

Having surprised even herself when she qualified for the free skating program final on Tuesday night with a then personal best, Lee produced a solid performance on the ice, despite an early fall on a fourth triple toe.

Lee only learned she was competing in Vancouver just three weeks ago following the withdrawal of Israel's Tamar Katz, but the 16-year-old has made the experience count as she finished in 20th position overall with a score of 52.16.

Having started ninth in the 24-woman field, Lee opened confidently in a routine choreographed to the theme from the film, 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age'.

And despite the fall, Lee recovered to finish solidly, improving her personal best score by six points.

However, the event belonged to Kim, the South Korean completing a flawless free skate to claim Olympic gold in the ladies' figure skating.

Kim, almost out of sight in the lead after Tuesday's short program, extended her advantage after a perfect four-minute performance tonight for a total of 228.56, way ahead of Japan's Mao Asada who took silver with 205.50.

Kim, though, was upstaged by local Joannie Rochette, who won bronze less than a week after the death of her mother.

Rochette followed, recovering after an early slip to total 202.64 and take the bronze medal. The Canadian could barely hold back tears as the Pacific Coliseum rose to acknowledge her bravery.
