The Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins both enjoyed wins in the race for supremacy in the NHL's Eastern Conference.

Montreal lead the conference by two points from the Pengiuns after their 4-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Canadiens forward Brandon Prust was instrumental in the win, scoring a goal and adding two assists to help get his side over the line.

Scores were locked at 2-2 after two periods, but final-term goals from Lars Eller and PK Subban helped lift Montreal to victory.

Pittsburgh, meanwhile, kept the pressure on the leaders thanks to a terrific comeback victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Trailing 4-1 after a rough first period, the Pengiuns gradually worked their way back into the contest and four successive goals - the last from a Chris Kunitz wrist shot 18 seconds into the third period - gave them the win.

In other results, the Boston Bruins posted their eighth consecutive win over the Toronto Maple Leafs thanks to a 4-2 victory, while the New Jersey Devils came from 2-0 down to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 in a shootout.

The Rangers won the battle of New York over cross-town rivals the Islanders, with Marian Gaborik scoring the winner in overtime, and Mike Ribeiro and Alex Ovechkin each scored a goal and had two assists in the Washington Capitals 7-1 rout of the Florida Panthers.

The Columbus Blue Jackets posted a 2-1 overtime victory against the Vancouver Canucks, the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 while the Detroit Red Wings cruised past the Edmonton Oilers 3-0.

The St Louis Blues took care of the Phoenix Coyotes 6-3 - with Patrik Berglund scoring two goals and David Perron contributing three assists for the winners - and the Dallas Stars scored three times in the third period to brush aside the Los Angeles Kings 5-2.
