Aussies in the medals

Aussies in the medals

02/03/2012 10:42:50 PM

Australian Lucy Chaffer has taken the silver medal in the Skeleton World Cup race in Canada, finishing less than two tenths of a second behind local hero, Melissa Hollingsworth.

The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) scholarship holder was second fastest on both her runs in round six of the World Cup, held on the 2010 Olympic Winter Games track at Whistler.

Teammate, Emma-Lincoln Smith, had a disappointing day, finishing in 17th place.

Chaffer was right on the pace from the outset, finishing second fastest on both runs and a total of only 0.17 seconds behind the winner.

Her second place moves her up to ninth in the overall World Cup standings, while Lincoln-Smith remains in seventh place.

"I was really happy with how I raced today, it was well beyond what I was hoping and expecting," Chaffer said.

"Racing consistently has been something I've been working on this year and I'm happy I could do it today when it counted. "

"I really enjoy this track, I like the atmosphere and how it flows, and today it all came together for me."

Brittney Cox, meanwhile, won bronze in the World Cup moguls event at Deer Valleyin the USA on Friday night (US Time).

Although the 2010 Olympian is still only 17, Cox produced a series of brilliant runs in front of a large crowd to finish the night event with the bronze medal, behind Americans Hannah Kearney, who completed her 13th straight World Cup victory, and Heather McPhie.

The Australian Institute of Sport/NSW Institute of Sport scholarship holder becomes only the second Australian woman to win a medal in World Cup or World Championship moguls competition. Maria Despas took silver at the 2001 World Championships.

Cox, who is having her best season in her short career, is now ranked 14th in the world after the Deer Valley result.

She said she hadn't expected a podium finish this season although many involved with international moguls skiing have predicted a bright future her.

"I'm so excited," said Cox.

"I had no idea I would be able to achieve a World Cup podium this year."

"I had a super-awesome day today. I felt I was in the right frame of mind in the start gate, ready to go, and I executed the things I have been working on in training for the last few days."

"I also skied fast which is something I have been working on the last few weeks."
