Crackers' Call - GWS to struggle

12/05/2011 12:09:53 AM

For over a year the great Kevin Sheedy has been criss-crossing the nation telling us how good GWS is and how Israel Folau's foot might drop off by July because he's been kicking so many goals.

He's talked about how he's got a huge number of draft picks and how they'll be competitive from Round 1.

Well reality will set in in the next couple of months with the NAB Cup and the first round.

Sheedy has recruited very old footballers from other clubs.

Sure most of them have had decorated careers but they are running on old legs.

Dean Brogan, Chad Cornes and Luke Power are all premiership players and James McDonald is an ex-captain.

Leadership qualities abound but it's no good having leadership qualities as the opponent runs away from you on fresher legs.

They opened their facility with a big bang, the AFL heavyweights were there, it was ordained as the place to be by Andrew Demetriou and Mike Fitzpatrick.

Forget about Eddie calling it falafel land, it is the promised land.

But it will be a long haul though.

Critics of Sheedy have said he only went back to coaching to break Jock McHale's record but he believes the fire still burnt in his belly.

He was rejected by Melbourne and Richmond before becoming the successful candidate for GWS.

He's been a hot gospeller and sure he'd like to break the record for the most games coached.

Micky Malthouse was heading towards it but he ran into the Buckley hurdle and looks like he won't coach again.

Sheedy wants this team to succeed so as not to blemish a record that was already on the wane at Essendon.

He along with recruiting guru Gubby Allan will be hoping for instant success.

And of course not only have they already got players but next year under the eagle eye of Phil Scully, the $100,000 recruiting man, they'll have even more young talent.

But my assessment is, they are going to struggle, just like the Gold Coast struggled.

And their struggle will take quite a number of years until success arrives, which might not be during Sheedy's reign.

In other news, the sky is Blue and Bradman was a decent cricket player.
