Crackers' Call: Fev chasing the dollars

01/29/2012 02:19:02 PM

Three or four years ago Brendon Fevola was headline material, but now he looks like becoming the next football sideshow.

He almost kicked 100 goals for Carlton, he was everybody's darling and now it looks like he might play for Yarrawonga in the Ovens and Murray League and then go on a roadshow.

He has gone up and played in Darwin already and has now turned into the Jason Akermanis of this year.

Aker is down at Aberfeldie Park kicking the ball up in the air to himself getting ready to get his sideshow back on the paddock.

It is a bit of an indictment on the AFL that these people go round playing grassroots football, picking up five or six thousand dollars and that is the way they make their money.

This loophole has got to be closed as no one really benefits from it.

Last year Wayne Carey trained with Maribyrnong Park in the Essendon District Football League for four weeks.

They lined the fences to see him play.

They could only make money out of food and alcohol because nobody pays to get in.

Heaps turned up, they had about 10,000 people there.

There was only one problem.

Halfway through the first quarter, bang went the calf and off went Carey and off went the crowd.

All that was left afterwards was cold pies.

Do we need this?

It is terrible seeing this.

It is like an old prized fighter going round to the country shows and putting their fists up and saying they are the next Australian champion and who wants to fight me.

The pioneer of this was Mark 'Jacko' Jackson.

He went around and played at a few clubs, span the ball on his arm and the rest.

Overall I don’t know if it is good for football as it keeps a young player out.

I know they have chook raffles and lucky door prizes every week, but the AFL should invest more in metropolitan and country football teams rather than having to go to these old ex champions.

It is a pretty sorry sight to see them like that.

Kinda agree Crackers. It's not great to have these former "greats" doing the rounds. Problem is, if you give the metro and country leagues more money they'll have more to spend on the ex-AFL players so maybe more would get involved? (Hopefully the clubs would spend the money other ways but how can this be policed?)
