Bushrangers, Bulls set for battle

03/16/2010 06:25:51 AM

Victoria heads into this week's final against Queensland at the MCG as favourite to claim back-to-back Sheffield Shield titles, with the sides clashing in the first-class decider for the sixth time in 11 seasons.

The teams have split their two four-day games so far this summer, the Bushrangers winning the first at home in late November when they prevailed by an innings and 50 runs before the Bulls turned the tables just last month by a wicket at the Gabba thanks to a 10th-wicket stand of 58.

On that occasion Chris Swan and Luke Feldman were largely responsible for Queensland recovering from 7-114 to reach 9-252 and pull off the amazing victory in a game that had been dominated by Victoria until it crashed for 104 in its second innings.

From the line-ups that contested that match, the Bushrangers regain skipper Cameron White from national duty and opener Chris Rogers from a broken hand while the Bulls have rushed back all-rounder James Hopes and batsman Lee Carseldine.

The only change to the 12 that crushed Tasmania last week sees batsmen Lloyd Mash left out as Victoria named a 13-man squad, while Queensland also named Jason Floros and Ben Dunk in a 13-man squad of their own on Sunday.

With fast bowler Nathan Rimmington left out of the team that went down to Western Australia last week, Queensland has named an inexperienced squad with 19-year-old Floros joining fellow teenager and rookie Chris Lynn and 20-year-old leggie Cameron Boyce.

But White, who didn't play in the most recent game between the teams, isn't getting overconfident about his team's chances even though the youthful Bulls' line-up last year included Shane Watson, who has moved to New South Wales and retired duo Andrew Symonds and Martin Love.

"It's obviously still very good - those three players are amongst the best in the world so they would be missed out of any team not just Queensland - but this team that Chris Simpson is in charge of is a very good team," White said.

"They play with good spirit, play well together and they enjoy playing with each other so that is half the battle half the time."

While White is expecting Queensland to play an extra bowler as Hopes can provide runs with the bat and wickets with his medium pace, the visitors believe that the recent narrow win at the Gabba gives them a psychological advantage according to skipper Chris Simpson.

"Obviously Victoria have had the wood over us in Shield cricket and to be able to what we think is slowly try and turn things around, that's a good start in that direction," Simpson said.

"To get up in this game, it will be a huge moment. That win there has done a lot for us."

"We're well aware of their strengths, well aware that they're a very good cricket team with a lot of good form ... we're trying to emulate what they have."
