Watson, Haddin sit out

Watson, Haddin sit out

02/09/2010 10:01:44 PM

All-rounder Shane Watson and wicketkeeper Brad Haddin will both be rested from the third and fourth games of the Commonwealth Bank Series against the West Indies, with Adam Voges and Tim Paine called up.

With the upcoming tour of New Zealand and then the ICC World Twenty20 and Tests against Pakistan in England, selectors have decided to 'manage the workloads' of Watson, who has had a superb summer with both bat and ball and Haddin.

"After a busy international summer, and with an upcoming tour of New Zealand in mind, the NSP (National Selection Panel) has taken the opportunity to manage the workloads of Brad Haddin and Shane Watson for the next two matches of the Commonwealth Bank Series," said NSP chairman Andrew Hilditch.

"Paine thoroughly deserves another chance behind the stumps for Australia in ODI cricket after playing so well in England, the ICC Champions Trophy and India late last year."

"Voges was unlucky to miss selection for the opening two matches of the Commonwealth Bank Series against the West Indies but now has a chance to press for selection."

Paine enjoyed an outstanding introduction to international cricket on Australia's tour of England last year when Haddin returned home early to recover from a broken finger, the Tasmanian scoring one century and three 50s as he averaged just under 32.

Already leading the series 2-0 following Tuesday's eight-wicket win inside 27 overs at Adelaide Oval, Australia will be looking to wrap up the five-match Commonwealth Bank Series title when it clashes with the West Indies next on Friday in Sydney.
