Sharapova breezes through

Russian 14th seed Maria Sharapova cruised into the third round of the US Open with a 6-1 6-2 win over Iveta Benesova in little over an hour on Thursday.

The 2006 champion was never troubled against world No.67 Benesova, not even giving her opponent a break point.

The world No.16 will now face American teenager Beatrice Capra in the third round.

Capra, the world No.371, continued her dream run at Flushing Meadows by beating 18th seed Aravane Rezai 7-5 2-6 6-3.

Fourth seed Jelena Jankovic was pushed to three sets for the second time in the tournament , but overcame Croat Mirjana Lucic 6-4 3-6 6-2.

The Serb was helped by a wayward Lucic, who racked up an astounding 60 unforced errors for the match, which made up almost two-thirds of Jankovic's total point count (93).

But there was no such joy for ninth seed Agnieszka Radwanska as she was bundled out by China's Shuai Peng 2-6 6-1 6-2.

Czech 23rd seed Maria Kirilenko won the last eight games to beat Austrian Yvonne Meusburger 4-6 7-5 6-0 to set up a third round clash with Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Danish top seed Caroline Wozniacki won 6-0 6-0 over Taipei's Kai-Chen Chang, meaning she has lost just just one game in her two matches so far.

Russian seventh seed Vera Zvonareva snuck past Germany's Sabine Lisicki 6-1 7-6 (7-5).

Zvonareva's countrywoman Svetlana Kuznetsova had it easier in her second-round match, beating Anastasija Sevastova 6-2 6-3.

Germany's Andrea Petkovic came from behind to beat local hope Bethanie Mattek-Sands 3-6 6-3 7-5.

Estonia's Kaia Kanepi cruised past Akgul Amanmuradova 6-2 6-4, Swiss Patty Schnyder accounted for Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in straight sets, while 25th seed Alexandra Dulgheru beat Sofia Arvidsson.

Other winners on day four were Yung-Jan Chan, Dominika Cibulkova, Lourdes Dominguez Lino and Yanina Wickmayer.
