Scotland's anti-English motivation

Scotland's anti-English motivation

Andy Robinson insisted he has no problem encouraging his Scotland players to use anti-English sentiment as motivation for Sunday's (NZT) Calcutta Cup clash at Murrayfield.

Robinson takes on the country of his birth and the team he both played for and coached for the first time this weekend in a game his new side must win to stand a realistic chance of avoiding the Six Nations wooden spoon.

Despite being 'proud' of his English heritage, the 45-year-old is determined to do whatever it takes to land an elusive first championship victory since taking charge.

And that includes allowing his players to express nationalist sentiment in the dressing room before the game.

"If they have that feeling then that's great," Robinson said.

"There are a number of drivers that you have, emotional drivers going into games.

"It's important that we use every aspect.

"The crowd getting behind the team before the five-o'clock kick-off and throughout the game will give the team a huge lift.

"We need every ounce on Sunday to beat a very good England side.

"They've won two games and could've won that third game.

"They're already talking, saying they can do something special.

"We've got to be able to stand toe-to-toe with England."

Robinson is not planning any Braveheart-style speeches himself, preferring to let the 'leaders' in his team to take charge of pre-match proceedings.

He said: "What I'll be saying will be pretty simple, after being involved with the team, seeing how positive the team is, seeing that there's a determination for the team to play and to perform.

"I believe there's not a lot I have to say to them on Sunday.

"Obviously, the situation that we're in, having not won a game, there's extra determination to get the team across the line.

"We've played well in games but we've not be able to finish off and take that next step.

"That's a key aspect for us."

Scotland perennially go into Calcutta games as underdogs but Robinson insists his players need to think of themselves as equal to its opponents if it is to stand a chance.

"This is about 15 players v 15 players," he said.

"We've looked at the England side, we respect the ability the England team has and obviously it's a great physical challenge to be out there playing against a team that has a lot of good rugby players.

"We know what we have to do collectively as a group and it's about doing that for 80 minutes."

Scotland are looking to make it a hat-trick of Murrayfield wins over the Auld Enemy, with its 2006 and 2008 triumphs having been achieved thanks largely to a supreme forward effort.

But Robinson insists success up front is not the be all and end all.

"Not at all - it's about who scores the most points," he said.

"We've got to make sure that we don't give dull penalties away, we don't give penalties away for Jonny Wilkinson to kick.

"We've got to make sure right across the board that we're knocking the white shirts over and challenging for that ball.

"And we've got to make sure that we take our chances - it's as simple as that."

A sympathetic referee would also help, with Robinson earlier this week kicking off the pre-match mind games by urging Marius Jonker to clamp down on what he claims are England's American Football-style blocking tactics.

Opposite number Martin Johnson laughed off Robinson's complaint, insisting England were 'the least-penalised team in the championship'.

But Robinson is sticking to his guns over the blocking issue, adding: "As long as the referee sees it, we're happy."
