Spaniard Tommy Robredo kicked off his campaign at the Moselle Open in Metz in fine fashion on Monday by beating Germany's Daniel Brands.
In one of just three main-draw matches on the day, the seventh seed accounted for his 80th-ranked opponent 6-1 7-6 (7-3).
Brands couldn't convert any of his three break point chances, while Robredo broke twice to set up the straight-sets win.
In other matches played Monday, Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin set up a second-round clash with Robredo following a comfortable 6-4 6-4 victory over Frenchman Florent Serra.
Michael Berrer won an all-German affair, beating Rainer Schuettler 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 to record his first ever victory over the former Australian Open finalist on the ATP Tour.
Mischa Zverev, Edouard Roger-Vasselin, Igor Sijsling and Thomas Fabbiano all qualified for the main draw on Monday.
