Portugal coach Queiroz sacked

The Portugese Football Federation have sacked Carlos Queiroz as manager of the national team.

The former Real Madrid coach was serving a six-month ban for insulting anti-doping agents prior to his side's World Cup campaign in South Africa earlier this year, complaining his players were being targeted.

"Carlos Queiroz's contract is settled (ended) with immediate effect," Gilberto Madail said, the president of the FPF.

Queiroz's side scored seven goals in South Africa, all in one match against North Korea, while they were kept scoreless in their remaining two group matches, and also in their first knockout match as they bowed out in the round-of-16.

Things have not improved for the Portugese side since, nabbing just one point from their opening Euro 2012 qualifying fixtures against Cyprus and Norway.

The 57-year-old took up the post as head coach of Portugal in 2008, after a stint assisting Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in the English Premier League.
