England are in control at stumps on day three of the second Test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi.
Andrew Strauss' side – who trail the three-match series 1-0 – resumed on Friday at 5-207 and Stuart Broad's quick-fire 58 helped them score 327, giving them a 70-run lead after the first innings.
In response, Monty Panesar (3-44) led England's bowling effort, with Pakistan finishing play at 5-125, 55 ahead but with only six wickets in hand.
England lost four wickets for just 41 runs late on day two and Matthew Prior (three) joined in his team-mates in the pavilion with just 20 runs added to the overnight score.
Prior was trapped lbw by the impressive Saeed Ajmal (4-108) but Ian Bell (29) and Broad got England back on track.
Their 41-run union was broken by Umar Gul (1-53), who dismissed Bell, but cameos from Graeme Swann (15) and Jimmy Anderson (13) helped Broad to take the tally past 300.
Broad found the boundary with ease, scoring his runs at almost a run a ball as England gained momentum.
Abdur Rehman (2-67) removed Swann before Mohammad Hafeez (3-54) dismissed Anderson and Panesar in the same over to wrap up the innings.
Panesar's stay at the batting crease may have lasted just two balls but he would be back to bowl 25 overs before the day's conclusion and he snared the first wicket of Pakistan's second innings when Mohammad Hafeez was trapped lbw for 22.
Taufeeq Umar (seven) was bowled by Swann (1-32) in the next over before Panesar added Younis Khan (one) and captain Misbah-ul-Haq (12) to his list of victims.
Pakistan were reduced to 4-54 but a fighting partnership between Azhar Ali (46 not out) and Asad Shafiq (35 not out) carried them to stumps.
The latter could have been dismissed in the dying stages of the day though, only for an England review – which showed Panesar's ball clipping leg-stump – to be turned down as it did not overrule the field umpire's decision.
Pakistan will resume day four with a lead of 55 runs with six wickets in hand.
