Hockeyroos lose to Dutch

The Netherlands remain undefeated at the top of Pool A after a comfortable 4-1 win over Australia at the Women's Hockey World Cup in Rosario, Argentina on Friday.

On a busy day in which six matches took place after a rain forced play to be abandoned on Thursday, the Netherlands stole the show with an excellent performance.

The four goals took the Dutch tally to 18 from three games with hat-trick hero Maartje Paumen now having scored seven goals so far, including two bags of three.

Australia's chances of reaching the semi-finals are now in serious doubt as they now need to win both of their remaining group matches against New Zealand and Germany.

Paumen opened the scoring early before Nicole Arrold struck an equaliser for Australia after 21 minutes.

Paumen's second goal on the stroke of half-time gave the Dutch the ascendancy before her third after 40 minutes put some distance between the two teams.

Minke Smeets put the finishing touches on an impressive victory which puts the Netherlands on nine points in their pool, level with Germany who beat India 4-1.

India have conceded 17 goals in three matches and would be thankful for 15-year-old Rani Pampal who scored her fourth goal of the tournament to add credibility to the scoreline.

In the evening match, four second-half goals excited fans as Japan and New Zealand drew 2-2.

Japan led by two goals but the Black Sticks bounced back from a big defeat to the Netherlands in their previous match by stealing a draw.

In Pool B, tournament hosts Argentina were easy 4-0 winners over Spain thanks to Noel Barrionuevo's double.

The win lifts Argentina to nine points, two ahead of England who came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw with South Korea thanks to Helen Richardson's equaliser.

China, who started the tournament poorly with two defeats, were 4-1 winners over South Africa and hold faint hopes of progressing to the next round.
