Davies takes early advantage

A monster putt on her final hole of the day has helped England's Laura Davies take the early lead after the first day at the Australian Women's Open.

Starting from the 10th tee at the Commonwealth Golf Club, Davies posted a five-under 68 on Thursday, including an impressive thirty-foot putt on the ninth hole as she leads the field by two strokes going into the second day.

Just behind Davies is a five strong group at three-under, that includes Australians Rebecca Flood and Alison Whitaker.

Flood posted five birdies and two bogeys in her round, while Whitaker sneaked into the tie for second on the back of a sizzling back nine where she picked up three strokes via an eagle on the 13th and birdie on the 18th.

Another Australian in Lindsey Wright is a further stroke behind after recording a two-under 71, while Katherine Hull, Sarah Oh and Kristie Smith are four strokes behind Davies with some work ahead of them.
