Davies grabs share of lead

Davies grabs share of lead

Defending champion Rhys Davies carded a one-under 70 to move into a share of the lead at the halfway point of the Trophee Hassan II in Morocco.

Davies followed up his 67 at the Golf du Palais Royal on Thursday with a solid 70 at the Golf de L'Ocean on Friday, with two birdies countered by a solitary bogey on the fifth.

The 25-year-old Welshman is joined on six-under by Dutchman Joost Luiten, who shot a two-under 69, also at the Golf de L'Ocean course in Agadir.

"I'm not feeling any pressure despite being defending champion this week," Davies said.

"It's a different golf course for one, and I just feel very relaxed. I'm enjoying the pro-am format and I had a great partner today - Mazamischi Ito.

He's a great player and has a great future ahead of him in golf."

"I've been working hard on my swing with my coach, trying to match up my arm swing with my body swing, and it's getting there. The hard work is starting to come off. It's quite hard to do it in this wind though."

England's David Horsey is a shot further back on five-under after a 71 at the Golf du Palais Royal where he is joined by flying Finn Mikko Ilonen, who shot an eight-under 64 to rocket up the leaderboard.

Sweden's Peter Hedblom, Indian duo Shiv Kapur and Jeev Milkha Singh, South Africa's George Coetzee, England's Robert Rock, Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke and Argentine Julio Zapata are also on five-under heading into the weekend.

Overnight leader Peter Lawrie imploded on Friday, with a five-over par 76 seeing him relinquish his three-stroke lead to sit tied for 18th place on three-under alongside former US Open champion Michael Campbell. While Davies was more consistent, Luiten's round featured double-bogeys on both par threes on the front nine, a bogey at the ninth and seven birdies.

"I was good on the back nine with four birdies so that kept me going," said Luiten.

"It was tough today, really tough, especially on the front nine. The holes coming into the wind are very tricky."

"On the back nine the wind was less but there are some really tricky pin positions, so overall it was a pretty hard day and you needed to be very straight off the tee. I'm pleased with the score I've come away with."

"It's always good to be leading after two rounds but we are only halfway so there is a lot of work left to be done. But it's good to be up the board. It was fairly steady but I made two double bogeys so I definitely left some shots out there."
