Jenson Button finally put one over on McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton on Saturday - in a week when he rekindled his relationship with former love interest Jessica Michibata.
Coincidence or not, the reigning champion outqualified Hamilton for the first time in seven races and will start fifth on the grid for tomorrow's German Grand Prix, one place ahead of the championship leader.
Button split with lingerie model Michibata two months ago, but the 30-year-old revealed the time spent apart made him realise he had made a mistake.
Michibata let the cat out of the bag they were back together when she posted on social networking site Twitter earlier in the week.
The 25-year-old mentioned she would be heading to Hungary next weekend, scene of the next race as it follows immediately after tomorrow's event at Hockenheim.
Then with qualifying ongoing, she wrote: "Cheering my boyfriend at a sports bar with my friend! ganbatte (Japanese for 'go for it') Jenson!!! Go Go!!!!!!!!!"
When asked about his reconciliation, Button was clearly caught unawares as he said: "Wow! You've got me on the back foot now."
"That's one's a private one, but you'll see her, she'll be in Hungary."
On track Button responded to outpace Hamilton, and is now intent on closing the 12-point gap at the top of the standings to his fellow Briton.
"I don't see any reason why we can't have a good day and very good race tomorrow," said Button.
"The first lap is going to be important to stay out of trouble, but also to try and move forward."
"I'll be hoping to pass some cars early on, and I definitely think we can get a great result tomorrow."
The concern, however, is that Button finished seven tenths of a second behind front row duo Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso, who were separated by a mere 0.002secs at the end of the 4.574km lap.
With McLaren's version of the exhaust blown diffuser still in its infancy now the team finally has it on the car, these are early days.
"It took a little bit of time for us to get used to the balance of the car this weekend," added Button.
"I was pretty happy with my final lap, so I don't know where the extra seven tenths (to pole) is."
"That's the slightly worrying thing because it was a good lap, and I don't really think there was anything else I could've got out of the car."
"But we've definitely made a step forward with the blown diffuser, although it's still not quite enough in qualifying spec."
"But hopefully we'll see some more performance tomorrow."
Hamilton also admitted to doing the best job he could, and believes the team still has 'more work to do' if it is to finally improve its pace relative to the Red Bulls and now clearly Ferrari.
For both Button and Hamilton it will again be a case of relying on their race pace, which has proven to be their get-out-of-jail card so far this season when they have struggled in qualifying.
"I think there'll be an improvement in our performance relative to the others tomorrow because our race pace is generally better than our qualifying pace," said Hamilton."
"Hopefully the weather will be good too so we can push the guys in front and try and make up some places."
