Big week for Massa

Big week for Massa

07/24/2010 07:30:11 PM

Felipe Massa has his sights set on reaching the end of his road to salvation, in Sunday's German Grand Prix and next weekend in Hungary.

Sunday will mark the one-year anniversary of an accident in qualifying for last year's Hungarian Grand Prix that almost cost Massa his life.

Massa required surgery to repair a fractured skull sustained when he was struck on the helmet by a spring weighing a kilogram that had broken off the Brawn GP of Rubens Barrichello.

The 29-year-old spent nine days in recovery in Budapest's AEK military hospital, a facility where he will make an emotional return next week to thank doctors and staff who looked after him.

Addressing the poignant times ahead, both tomorrow's date and his trip to Budapest, the Brazilian said: "Almost a year ago it was a very difficult time for me.

"But somebody was saying I still needed to be here, so I'm here, very happy and working, still doing my job.

"So let's go back to Hungary and let's try to achieve a good result there, but first of all we need to think about tomorrow.

"Then we have one week to think about Hungary and try for another good result, to do another good job because it would be even more fantastic given what happened."

Massa certainly has the opportunity of commemorating tomorrow with at least a podium finish as he will start third on the grid behind Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso.

After being out of the points in the last three races, Massa added: "I'm happy to be back in the top three and even more focused for the race tomorrow.

"I hope we can do a good job and score as many points as possible for the team and for ourselves as well."
