Wickens triumphs from pole

The Canadian ensured he would start at the head of the grid for the second year running at the German circuit after topping the timesheets in Saturday's qualifying.

Wickens turned that pole into victory with consummate ease in mixed weather conditions in Nuremberg.

The opening five laps took place behind the safety car as the heavens opened, but when the skies cleared and normal racing began Wickens made a fine getaway in his AMG Mercedes.

He was aided by Paul Di Resta's spin across Jamie Green on the first racing lap, which held up the majority of the field and gave Wickens a three-second lead.

Green threatened to fight for first place, but the Audi driver was always playing catch up.

Indeed, the British driver did claim second, yet he almost fell to third place when Christian Vietoris overtook him during a pit stop, only to suffer an issue with his right front wheel deep into the race.

Mattias Ekstrom subsequently rounded off the podium ahead of Edoardo Mortara who took fourth, while Adrien Tambay held off Pascal Wehrlein in a thrilling battle for fifth.

Further down the field, Di Resta came home a disappointing 15th after failing to recover from his earlier spin.

Championship leader Marco Wittmann could only muster an eighth-place finish, but he still holds a 17-point lead over Mortara in the standings.
