Vettel in Raikkonen's sights at Spa

Kimi Raikkonen is eager to close the gap on championship leader Sebastian Vettel at Sunday's Formula One Grand Prix at Spa.

The Lotus driver heads to Belgium currently 38 points behind Red Bull's Vettel after an ultra-competitive first half of the season.

Raikkonen has only managed the one race win for the season, in the opening GP in Australia, but has finished at every track to keep him in the hunt with nine races to go following the summer break.

The daunting Spa track, the longest on the F1 calendar, means tyre-maintenance will be extra crucial as teams deal with the greater demands of high speeds and demanding long-duration corners.

Raikkonen has had good success at Spa and hopes to capitalise on that success to ramp up the pressure on Vettel.

"Extra points are always good and if you win the race no-one scores more points than you," the Finn said.

"For me there have only been good memories from Spa and it's great to go racing there.

"You can't get the same kind of a feeling anywhere else. It's great to race with a modern racing car at a proper circuit which has such a great tradition.

"Spa offers very challenging high-speed corners and you need to get the right set-up for the car. As we've seen so many times this year, a good grid position is extremely important.

"It will be very decisive at Spa too, even though it is maybe easier to overtake there than at some other tracks.

"So much depends on the qualifying result, so we need to find a decent set-up on Friday and Saturday and have a solid qualifying session on Saturday afternoon."

While Raikkonen fancies his chances, Vettel deserves to start the weekend as a worthy race favourite.

The three-time world champion has again driven brilliantly this season, matching his blistering qualifying speed with remarkable consistency.

Vettel has finished on the podium in seven of the 10 races so far, including four victories.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso (39 points behind) and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton (48) are also right on Vettel's tail and keen to improve their chances of the championship at Spa.

Hamilton comes into the race having won last time out in Hungary and Mercedes have the pace after finishing on pole in six of the last seven races.

Alonso has been Vettel's main challenger for most of the season and cannot be discounted at the Belgian track.

"I did well in 2005 when I came second and also back in Formula 3000," Alonso said.

"So far, I've never been in with a real chance of fighting for the win and I've often retired at Spa, usually for reasons of plain bad luck or with technical problems or down to my own mistakes.

"So it would be great to make up for that this year, picking up all those lost points."
