The 16-year-old son of former F1 racer Jos, Verstappen has signed a deal with Red Bull's Junior Team, which has produced their current top-class line-up - Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo.

Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniil Kvyat are also in F1 currently having progressed from the Red Bull academy, while the likes of Karun Chandhok, Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari have also made the progression.

Verstappen's signature had become hot property after a stunning showing in Formula Three this year, including seven first-place finishes and 11 podiums for the Van Amersfoort Racing team, with 2014's runaway championship leaders Mercedes hoping their recent successes would wow the prodigal talent.

However, a deal has been reached with Red Bull, where he will continue in the lower formula, though he could become F1's youngest driver if given a seat for the 2015 campaign.

Red Bull confirmed: "We are very pleased to announce that Max Verstappen has accepted our invitation to join the Red Bull Junior Team.

"This is effective immediately and the 16-year-old Dutchman will continue his FIA Formula 3 European Championship campaign at the Nurburgring this weekend as a Red Bull Junior in the Van Amersfoort Racing team and additionally will compete at the Macau Grand Prix in November."

Verstappen said: "It goes without saying that I'm very happy and I feel honoured to be part of the Red Bull Junior Team, which has successfully brought and guided many drivers into Formula One.

"I will take this opportunity with both hands in order to develop and maximise my career with Red Bull.

"I want to thank Dr. Helmut Marko for his involvement in making this partnership possible and I want to thank Red Bull for putting their trust in me."
