The race hadn’t been won from pole position since 1996, but Red Bull's Whincup and Dumbrell pulled it off, with a 2.65sec lead over James Courtney/Greg Murphy and Garth Tander/Warren Luff.

It was an impressive 10th race victory for Whincup in a season that has become very predictable.

"The car was unbelievably good, PD did a faultless performance, I just did the afternoon stint and brought it home,” Championship leader Whincup said post-race.

Lee Holdsworth's serious crash on lap 133 set the stage for a 22-lap sprint finish to the endurance classic.

Holdsworth, who was able to walk away from the carnage, was one of three retirements in the 500 kilometre race.

But there was no such threat to Whincup's lead,  with lapped cars between himself and Courtney denying car 22 a clear run after the re-start.

Craig Lowndes, in the second Red Bull car was right behind the top three, but Lowndes couldn’t shake Tander in the closing laps.

That helped Tander to his first podium finish at the Sandown 500.

However, the fourth place finish was enough to get Lowndes up into second in the Championship, surpassing Mark Winterbottom and leading him by just six points.

Whincup now leads Lowndes by 273 championship points.

Next event on the V8s calendar is the Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama from October 9-12.
