Tyre selection crucial for Ferrari in Malaysia

Ferrari must assess the conditions in Malaysia perfectly to ensure they get the best out of their tyres, says technical director James Allison.

Sebastian Vettel gave the Italian manufacturer a promising start to the season with a third-place finish in Australia, and Ferrari are keen to keep improving in order to close the gap to Mercedes.

Malaysia presents a tough challenge for all the teams this weekend due to the extreme heat in Sepang, with Allison aware tyre selection will play a huge part in any success they have.

"Sepang is a totally different climate [to Australia] but the track is not that different at the end of things," he said. "A car that was at a certain level of competitiveness in Melbourne should really inherit that in Sepang.

"The difference is Sepang is very hot and therefore it is a challenge to keep the car at the right temperature and more critically the tyres at the right temperatures. Managing the tyres is a bigger deal in Sepang.

"Once we get to the track, you forget if you are running hard medium or soft tyres and you have just got option or prime.

"You want to get onto the new rubber, and when you do that you find a good undercut possibility and that will make the race interesting strategically."
