Sykes unsure over Portimao success

Sykes heads to Portugal 39 points ahead of nearest challenger Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia) after the first seven rounds of the campaign having won both races at Misano in Italy last month.

The defending champion already has six race wins to his name in this campaign and will be favoured to add to that tally in the Algarve.

However, the Brit was unable to take maximum points in either of the two races at the same circuit last season, and admits he is not a fan of the track.

"I have enjoyed some time off after the double win at Misano and my injured hand and wrist are slowly improving," the Kawasaki rider said.

"We go to Portugal now and for me I think the layout is a little bit extreme for a Superbike in this era. The undulations are almost a little bit over the top but after Misano it would be very nice to keep the momentum going in the championship.

"It will be a big ask but as always we will do the best we can and I am sure the team around me will manage things in the best possible way.

"I have had some flashes at Portimao in the past, so potentially I know we can be very good this weekend. With those thoughts in mind I am looking forward to going to Portimao."

Meanwhile, Guintoli will need to rediscover his best form in order to close the gap to Sykes, with the Frenchman's last triumph coming back in round three in Netherlands.

Guintoli's compatriot Loris Baz should also provide a threat after finishing second behind team-mate Sykes in both races at Misano.

There will be doubts over whether Ireland's Eugene Laverty, who finished second in the championship last season, will be able to contend after fracturing his foot again.

However, the Suzuki rider is still hopeful of a strong result.

"In one respect I'm excited about Portimao because I believe that we are capable of fighting for the win," Laverty said.

"However, I re-injured my foot during race one at Misano so I'm not quite 100 per cent fit at the moment."
