Sykes takes Superpole in Assen

Kawasaki's Tom Sykes took Superpole on Saturday to clinch top spot on the grid for Sunday's World Superbike Championship races in Assen.

Last year's championship runner-up Sykes has had a mixed start to the season - with two podium finishes in the first three rounds of action - but he gave himself every chance of taking his first win of the campaign following a strong qualifying performance.

It was the 25th pole of Sykes' career, and his first since Magny-Cours last year.

Sykes' time of one minute 34.789 seconds was enough to see him top the timesheets in a tight session which saw the leading eight riders separated by just over a second.

Alongside Sykes on the front row are his team-mate and standings leader Jonathan Rea (+0.131secs), as well as Leon Haslam of Aprilia (+0.547), who sits 26 points adrift of Rea.

Chaz Davies (Ducati), home favourite Michael van der Mark (Honda) and Alex Lowes (Suzuki) will make up the second row.

Reigning champion Sylvain Guintoli, of Honda, could only manage ninth.
