Sykes edging closer to Superbikes title

The defending champion sits 31 points clear of nearest rival Sylvain Guintoli going into the penultimate weekend of the season knowing two victories could take him within touching distance of becoming the first rider since Carl Fogarty in 1999 to retain the crown.

Sykes has taken the chequered flag on eight occasions this season and has finished on the podium in all but six of the races in 2014.

He knows this weekend will be pivotal in his quest to claim the title, but is relaxed going to a circuit where he has won the last three races.

"A big weekend coming up and it is potentially getting down towards crunch time," he is quoted as saying by Crash.net.

"I am very relaxed and yet also excited to go to Magny Cours. It is a circuit we have done very well at in the past so I am looking forward to getting back on my Ninja ZX-10R.

"Despite scoring a podium in race two at Jerez we had a few issues at the previous round, especially in race one, so I am hoping we can be a lot stronger this time out.

"At this present time we are in a good championship position with the biggest margin for error. Hopefully we can stretch it a bit more this weekend."

Guintoli arrives in France in consistent form after four consecutive second-place finishes to keep his feint title hopes alive, but he must hope Sykes encounters trouble.

Marco Melandri, winner of three of the last four races for Aprilia, is making a late charge to the title but given Sykes has an 85-point lead he would need a dramatic turn of events to the three riders ahead of him to do so.

Third-placed Jonathan Rea also holds a slim chance of catching Sykes but the Honda rider remains positive ahead of the weekend.

"We've had some good results there in the past," he told the World Superbikes official website.

"To be honest, I'm just looking forward to riding the bike again; these long gaps between the last few races of the season are not good or helpful for maintaining any kind of rhythm."

The Magny Cours circuit contains 20 corners for the riders to negotiate on the 4.411kilometre track, with a 250metre start-finish straight.
