The Kawasaki rider finished Superpole 2 in a circuit-best time of one minute 36.366 seconds as he edged Davide Giugliano to ensure his fourth pole of the season as he seeks to take another step closer to defending his title.

Guigliano led for much of the race while Sykes was required to produce a late surge to reel the Italian in, with third-place Jonathan Rea and Sylvain Guintoli also in the reckoning late on.

With the leader regularly changing, it was Sykes who showed his quality in the end as he seeks to become the first rider since Carl Foggarty in 1999 to retain a world championship.

Loris Baz of Kawasaki had set the quickest time of the weekend to move into Superpole 2 along with Max Neukirchner.

The pair finished seventh and 12th respectively with Guintoli, second in the world standings, only able to secure himself a starting spot of fifth.

Rea, third in the standings, will start from the front row as he seeks to reel in Sykes and reduce the 67-point gap that separates the pair.

In the four times Sykes has claimed Superpole, the Englishman has won six of eight races and will go into Sunday's action full of confidence.
