Spectator killed at German endurance race

A fan died Saturday after a racecar crashed into the spectator area at a German VLN endurance race.

Jann Mardenborough of Britain was driving the No. 23 Nissan at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, a legendary road course near Cologne, Germany. Mardenborough lost control as his Nissan GT-R came over a rise. The car went airborne with its nose straight up, hit a barrier and flipped into a spectator area, according to sportscar365.com.

The spectator was pronounced dead at a nearby medical center. Four injured fans were taken to local hospitals. Mardenborough was not injured.

Race officials stopped the event after the crash while emergency workers rushed to the scene. They later canceled the race.

“Today’s events have been a tragedy," Nissan said in a statement. "We are all deeply shocked and saddened by these events and our immediate thoughts go to the deceased, those injured and their families and friends. The team is fully co-operating with the race organizers to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation into this incident.”
