Silverstone boss demands noisy engines

Silverstone's managing director Patrick Allen has called on Formula One to bring "the noise back", claiming the racing is boring and turning fans away.

Allen, who took over at the United Kingdom's most famous circuit in January, is worried F1 may not have a future in Europe the way it is going, and has demanded change to make it more popular.

Top priority for Allen is more competitive racing and the return of V8 engines.

"We need the noise back," Allen said on Tuesday.

"Sometimes I wonder whether the technical directors should be on the podium rather than the drivers because it seems you could put anyone in the cars.

"I wonder if the product is right for the fans.

"If we see dwindling fans and viewing figures falling away, people will start to question the value of the television rights."

With the future of the German Grand Prix in serious doubt, after the Nurburgring was unable to host in 2015, Allen is worried whether F1 can remain sustainable in Europe.

While the Concorde Agreement is supposed to "protect heritage sites", Allen argued the policy was "toothless".

"[I would] like to see a bit more bite from the FIA - if we're going to have a governing body, it should govern," Allen said.

According to Allen, F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has "put out the hand of friendship that he would like to help Silverstone and that we should get together and come up with some ideas, but that meeting has not taken place yet".
