Sebastian Vettel rues end of Formula One season

The world champion ended a remarkable 2013 by winning the season-ending Brazil Grand Prix at Interlagos on Sunday to equal Alberto Ascari's record of nine victories in a row.

Italian Ascari set that record over two seasons back in 1952-53, meaning that Red Bull driver Vettel is the first to rack up nine wins in a row in the same season.

He also equaled Michael Schumacher's record tally of 13 wins in a single campaign.

However, the 26-year-old German is disappointed that his historic season has come to an end, and he paid tribute to his team after his latest win.

Vettel said: "I am actually quite sad the season is coming to an end. The car has been phenomenal and has been getting better in every race.

"It was very difficult at the end today with the rain but I am extremely proud and a big thanks to the team and a big thanks to Renault as well."

Vettel's team-mate Mark Webber ended his Formula One career by finishing second to take third place overall in the drivers' standings, ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

Much has been made of the relationship between Vettel and Webber and although the world champion admitted that he has not always seen eye to eye with the Australian, Vettel revealed his respect for his outgoing team-mate.

He added: "Thanks to Mark, we didn't have the best of relationships but we have also have always had a lot of respect for each other and we have been a very successful pairing for the team."

Webber will now move to World Endurance Championship to race for Porsche and he was pleased to sign off on a high note.

He said: "It was a good finish to my career. I want to thank Seb, Fernando (Alonso), Lewis (Hamilton) all the guys who have been in window the last few years. I want to thank everyone in Australia and I want to thank everyone who has helped me - they know who they are."
