Repsol Honda pace pleases Marquez

MarcMarquez

The Spaniard took pole position at the Aragon Grand Prix on home soil on Saturday as he pipped team-mate Dani Pedrosa by 0.362seconds to set a new lap record.

Having performed well in all four free practice sessions ahead of qualifying, Marquez looked strong and was fastest until Pedrosa produced a hot lap of one minute, 47.549secs.

However, the 21-year-old was not to be denied and found some extra pace with his final flying lap in the last two sectors to secure an 11th pole in 14 races in 2014.

"Qualifying went very well, continuing the form that we have had so far this weekend," he is quoted as saying by Crash.net.

"We have focused a lot of our work on our race pace, looking less at setting a one-off lap time and more at finding a strong pace.

"Things are looking good for the race, although Dani also has a very good pace, so we'll have to see [in Sunday's race]."

Marquez will equal Mick Doohan's 17-year record of 12 wins in a season should he top the podium on Sunday and move a step closer to retaining the title he clinched in record-breaking fashion in 2013.
