Andrea Dovizioso is confident he can follow up his pole position with a race victory at the Grand Prix of Qatar on Sunday.

The Italian topped the timesheets on his Ducati with a time of 1:54.113 in Saturday's second qualifying session, with Dani Pedrosa and defending champion Marc Marquez (both Repsol Honda) second and third respectively.

Dovizioso has been thrilled with work of his team ahead of the curtain-raiser to the new MotoGP season, and he believes the manufacturer has delivered a bike capable of mixing it with the quickest riders this term.

"We have to try and win the race [on Sunday], but the base of the bike is so good," he told BT Sport.

"We can think to fight with the fastest riders even during the race because the bike entry, the turning [is good].

"I'm able to work during the week in a normal way in the details and we can be very consistent for the race.

"In qualifying I had a really good feeling for the bike and with the soft tyre I was able to make a special lap time."

Marquez racked up a record 13 victories on his way to the 2014 title and the Spaniard is confident of winning from third.

"It was a very good qualifying session but the strongest was Andrea," he told reporters.

"We tried our best and I couldn't make the perfect lap but I feel really good for the race."

Pedrosa added: "I'm very happy and the most important thing was to get onto the front row. That was huge but I think it was my fastest lap on this track so I'm looking forward to the race now."
