New US team for Formula One

The team is the brainchild of businessman Gene Haas, the joint owner of 2011 title-winning Nascar outfit Stewart-Haas Racing and founder of engineering firm Haas Automation.

And, with the FIA having announced a tender process for a 12th team late last year, F1 supremo Ecclestone is confident that he will be able to welcome two new cars in the near future.

"I think Haas will be accepted," Ecclestone told The Independent. "They have got the money but it's a question of whether they are going to spend it.

"A billion would last a new team owner four years. I've spoken to Haas but I don't know what they are going to do. It's America, so I don't know."

The sport has endured a difficult relationship with the United States over recent seasons.

The 2005 Indianapolis Grand Prix saw only six cars compete following concerns over Michelin tyres, while US F1 Team failed to make the grid having been granted entry in 2010.
