McLaren team principal Eric Boullier has played down reports Fernando Alonso thought it was 1995 when he woke following his accident at pre-season testing in Barcelona.

Alonso is set to miss the opening race of the Formula One season in Australia following the crash, which occurred at the Circuit de Catalunya on February 22.

Reports in Spain suggest some of the driver's first words after regaining consciousness were: "I'm Fernando, I'm in karts and want to become a Formula One driver."

However, while confirming Alonso sustained "a loss of temporary memory", Boullier insists the situation was not as severe as made out.

"It was just a normal concussion [with] a loss of temporary memory," Boullier told Sky Sports F1. "It's not as dramatic as you read in the media.

"Everything is back to normal."

Alonso, who is planning to return to action in the Malaysian Grand Prix at the end of March, appeared to make light of the situation when taking to Twitter on Friday.

He wrote: "In a few days the championship starts and we ran out [of] 'imagination'. I propose a game with RT to the most creative. #whereDidYouWakeUpToday"

Alonso also tweeted: "Keep working good ..... 30 min bike, 30 swim, 30 gym. Malaysia is one of the most demanding races, and we will be at 100 per cent!"
