Meeke on verge of maiden rally win

Kris Meeke - Cropped

Kris Meeke will take the Rally Argentina lead into the final day on Sunday, after the Brit held firm atop the standings on a Saturday marred by a bad crash.

Stage nine - the third of the day - saw Hyundai's Hayden Paddon and John Kennard crash, with onlookers injured.

Citroen's Meeke managed to maintain his lead in the mayhem, but his buffer was cut from over one minute to 38.6 seconds - with team-mate Mads Ostberg his closest rival with two stages to race.

After finishing on the podium thrice in his first full season of racing in 2014, Meeke is on track to break his race drought - and become the first Brit to win a World Rally Championship event since Colin McRae in Kenya in 2002.

Ostberg's fellow Norwegian Andreas Mikkelsen won stage 10 after it was re-routed following the stage nine drama.

Leading the World Rally Championship race in 2015, Sebastien Ogier picked up a stage win early on Saturday, but his fellow Volkswagen driver Mikkelsen topped the timesheets in each of the eighth, ninth and 10th stages.

Despite his success, Mikkelsen sits just over 25 minutes behind leader Meeke while Ogier is 37:46 off the lead - meaning the latter's bid for a perfect season will come to an end.

Ogier won the first three rallies of the season in Monaco, Sweden and Mexico.

Jari-Matti Latvala (+1:03.7s) is third overall, heading into stages 11 and 12 on Sunday - when the drivers will compete in two 16.32-kilometre stretches.
