"All the fans — it’s amazing that when you walk out on race day to see all the people," Montoya said, via Fox Sports. "We showed everyone what IndyCar racing is all about in that race on Sunday.

"There are 100 ways to lose this race and only one way to win it and we found out how to win it on Sunday."

Runner-up Will Power, Montoya’s teammate, earned $792,555 while third-place finisher Charlie Kimball made $564,055. Fourth-place finisher Scott Dixon, Kimball’s teammate, earned $615,805 in addition to a $100,000 bonus for the pole position. Conor Daly, who finished last, took home $201,805.

Montoya earned $1,235,690 from an overall purse of $9,473,505 in 2000 when he won the greatest spectacle in racing as a rookie. The 15-year gap between his two victories set a new record as the longest in Indy 500 history. The 39-year-old now has four IndyCar victories in 25 career starts.

"It sounds funny when you say 15 years," Montoya said. "It sounds like a long time. To be honest, we have done so many things apart from IndyCar, I really just done this three times. I still feel like I got to learn a lot. Like I still feel like we suck in qualifying. We were unlucky, but we're not as good as we need to be.

"We really worked, to be honest with you, in race trim, to make sure I could run the car the way I wanted to, be comfortable with it, be aggressive with it. That's what we did and we were good."
