Hamilton thrives on 'war' mentality

The Englishman was forced to retire on the second lap of the Belgian Grand Prix in August following a collision with Rosberg, but has opened up a lead of 24 points at the top of the standings by winning five consecutive races since.

And Hamilton believes the incident at Spa provided him with extra motivation to succeed this season.

"I had those four early wins [from Malaysia to Spain] and then there was a bad patch from Monaco onwards," he is quoted as saying by the Guardian. "And then Spa was like, 'I'm going to turn this up. I'm going to have to turn this up. This means war', that kind of feeling.

"Reflecting on it, I took that energy and turned that negative bomb into a positive."

With double points on offer at the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi for the first time, Hamilton cannot make sure of the title in Brazil this weekend, but he remains focused on sealing his second crown.

"If the points were the same for the next two races, I would feel in a much more opportunistic position but I know it’s very much still open," he added. "It is what it is. There's no point being upset about it.

"I've driven the best I've ever driven this year."
