FIA to carry out review of Bianchi accident

Jules Bianchi

Marussia driver Bianchi remains in a critical but stable condition at the intensive care unit of the Mie General Medical Center in Yokkaichi after suffering a severe head injury at Suzuka on October 10.

In a rain-affected race, the Frenchman collided with a recovery vehicle that was attending to Adrian Sutil's prior crash at the same corner.

He subsequently underwent emergency surgery and was found to have sustained a diffuse axonal injury.

The FIA, which governs a host of motorsports including Formula One, will now investigate Bianchi's accident before proposing new measures to improve safety at the next meeting of the World Motor Sport Council on December 3.

Peter Wright, the chairman of the FIA's safety commission, has been named president of the newly established 10-man panel, which also features former Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali, Emerson Fittipaldi - president of the FIA's drivers' commission - and Ross Brawn, the retired engineer who enjoyed huge success in F1 with the likes of Benetton, Ferrari, his own Brawn GP team and Mercedes.

A statement from the FIA on Monday read: "The group will carry out a full review of the accident to gain a better understanding of what happened, and will propose new measures to reinforce safety at circuits, with recommendations to be made for the FIA president [Jean Todt].

"The work of the group will start this week and a full presentation of its findings is to be made at the next meeting of the World Motor Sport Council on 3 December 2014 in Doha, Qatar."
