F1 funding should be spread evenly - Scheckter

JodyScheckter

This season has seen the likes of Caterham and Marussia enter administration, causing both teams to miss the grands prix in the United States and Brazil.

On Friday, Caterham announced that fundraising from fans had allowed them to return for the season-ending race in Abu Dhabi next weekend, but their long-term future remains uncertain.

And Scheckter, who won the 1979 world title with Ferrari, would like to see the vast amounts of money within F1 spread out to help the smaller teams.

"Obviously the scale of money has gone up massively," he told Perform. "I think the real question is should the money be divided more evenly over the teams.

"You can look at it both ways, that the teams that are winning the most, should they get the most money?

"And you can turn it around and say the ones that are winning should get the least money because the other ones need more money.

"From the outside, I would say that the money needs to be more evenly spread out so the lesser teams can at least afford to run."

One suggested solution has been for some of the bigger teams to run three cars rather than two, an idea Scheckter would support.

"They used to in my day, they had three cars sometimes," he added. "I don't see that there's a negative to it, no."
