With Fernando Alonso strongly rumoured to be on the verge of joining McLaren and Button a veteran of the sport at the age of 34, the 2009 world champion's F1 future has become a talking point ahead of this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix.

Several F1 drivers – including Nick Heidfeld, Anthony Davidson and Mark Webber – have competed in the World Endurance Championship over the past few years, but Button is remaining coy over the prospect of making the switch.

The Briton posted via his official Twitter account on Thursday: "No news I can share with you guys about my future yet. #Alwaysbettertohearitfromthehorsesmouth #JB22 let's have some fun this weekend guys!!"

When one Twitter user responded by asking him, "Because you've got no news, or you aren't allowed to say anything yet ?", Button playfully replied:  "Haha!"

Button's 2014 season started well as he finished third at the opening race in Australia, which has subsequently turned out to be his only podium place of the year.

The McLaren driver's last win came in Brazil in 2012.
