Bernie Ecclestone has admitted the introduction of double points for the last race of the Formula One season may not be fair on drivers.

The controversial ruling – introduced for the 2014 season – has been the source of much discussion, with Ecclestone wanting it extended to the final three races.

And while that proposal has not gone through, the double points remain, despite public doubts from Ecclestone.

He said the decision was to ensure the season remained close throughout, in the hope of avoiding a repeat of last year, when Sebastian Vettel waltzed to his fourth straight world title with three races remaining.

Ecclestone told Sky Sports: "Well I wouldn't have suggested it (double points) if I thought it wasn't the right thing to do.

"But I was concerned that the championship would still be - maybe - open with two or three races to go, and then somebody could catch up.

"(It is) probably not fair that somebody's done all that work early on and got so many points and somebody could just pop in and do a couple of races."

Ecclestone was speaking before the Bahrain Grand Prix that saw Mercedes complete a one-two finish, as Lewis Hamilton claimed glory ahead of Nico Rosberg.
