Previous editions of the race have taken place during the day at the circuit in Sakhir, with Ferrari having the most success since it joined the F1 calendar in 2004 with four wins.

Currently only Abu Dhabi and Singapore host races under lights, however, Bahrain will replicate that when it stages the third Grand Prix of the 2014 season.

"We are delighted to be able to trial the first phase of our lighting project at the WEC (World Endurance Championship), a major milestone in this hugely ambitious project for the BIC (Bahrain International Circuit), which is scheduled for completion in February," track boss Sheikh Salman bin Isa Al-Khalifa said following the announcement.

"This is by far the biggest development project we have ever undertaken at the BIC since the circuit was first built.

"I believe that there can be no better way for us to mark our 10th anniversary in F1 by demonstrating our long-term commitment to the sport through this significant investment."

Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel has dominated recent editions of the race, having claimed back-to-back wins in 2012 and 2013.
