Austin Dillon dominates Xfinity Series Hisense 300 at Charlotte

Austin Dillon

Pole-winner Austin Dillon had to fight off All-Star race winner Denny Hamlin late in the Xfinity Series Hisense 300 from Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday afternoon, but was able to lead when it counted to take the checkered.

A restart with 34 laps remaining saw Hamlin take the lead from Dillon, but the battle wasn't over. The drivers traded paint until Dillon gained the lead with 14 laps to go. He never looked back, capturing his second Xfinity win this season.

Dillon led the first 98 laps before giving up the lead for green flag pit stop but worked his way back to the front seven laps later. He led 163 of the race's 200 laps en route to victory lane.

"It was a heck of a race with Denny," Dillon told Fox Sports. "If I didn’t get in front of him, I wasn’t going to get the win. I found a line there in turn 3 and 4."

Kasey Kahne, who won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Charlotte last weekend, finished third.

"I was happy with a second-place finish," Hamlin said. "I thought we had a sixth-place car all day."

Regan Smith finished in fourth and Darrell Wallace Jr. was a career-best fifth. Wallace, a rookie, also extended his lead in the Sunoco Rookie of the Year standings.

Kevin Harvick (174) attempted to tie Kyle Busch for the all-time NASCAR series’ most top-five finishes. He was 14th.
