McLaren driver Fernando Alonso has left hospital after recovering from his crash at pre-season testing in Barcelona.

Alonso slammed into an inside wall at turn three of the Circuit de Catalunya on Sunday and was airlifted to hospital after receiving ambulance treatment by the track.

The Woking-based constructor later posted on Twitter to confirm that Alonso was "fine" and, although scans had not revealed any injuries, would remain in hospital for observation.

After the Spaniard was pictured leaving hospital on Wednesday, McLaren released a statement to confirm his discharge.

"Following his testing accident at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya last Sunday, we are pleased to confirm that Fernando Alonso has now left hospital," it read. "He has returned to his family’s home in Spain for further rest and recuperation.

"As a result, he will sit out this week’s final winter test, at which he was due to share driving duties with Jenson Button. Kevin Magnussen, McLaren-Honda’s test and reserve driver, will replace him.

"Jenson will be testing the McLaren-Honda car tomorrow, and the team will confirm the full day-to-day running order in due course."

Explaining the causes of the incident in an earlier statement, the team said: “Our findings indicate that the accident was caused by the unpredictably gusty winds at that part of the circuit at that time, and which had affected other drivers similarly.

"We can categorically state that there is no evidence that indicates that Fernando's car suffered mechanical failure of any kind."
