McLaren driver Fernando Alonso is in a stable condition after precautionary checks in hospital following a crash during testing in Barcelona.

Earlier on Sunday, Alonso slammed into the inside wall and, after receiving ambulance treatment on the track, was airlifted to hospital.

McLaren subsequently posted on Twitter that Alonso was conscious and speaking, and later confirmed that the Spaniard is fine and uninjured after a CT scan, with the two-time Formula One world champion to be kept in overnight for observation.

The accident added to a frustrating couple of days for McLaren, who have struggled with the set-up of their Honda engine.

After having Saturday off, Alonso was looking to put as many laps together as possible when he left the track after turn three.
