Young guns power Tigers

Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens is confident green-horn props Matt Groat and Aaron Woods won't be intimidated by facing Manly's vastly experienced front-row pairing in Friday night's grudge match against the premiers in Gosford.

A foot injury to Origin prop Keith Galloway means the Tigers will field one of the youngest front-row pairings in NRL history against the Sea Eagles at Bluetongue Stadium.

Twenty-year-olds Groat and Woods will go head-to-head with the Sea Eagles' representative front-row of Jason King and Brent Kite.

A look at the numbers shows just how big a challenge it will be for the Tigers youngsters.

The unfashionable pair have played just 36 NRL games between them while the Manly duo have 340 top grade games under their belt, not to mention three premierships and 12 Origin appearances between them.

"They'll be the youngest pairing I've put on the field for a very long time, if not the youngest pairing," Sheens said on Wednesday.

"It is a test but I'm very comfortable with how the two boys finished last year and how they've started this year."

"The off-season they had has been tremendous."

"I'm pretty comfortable and I'm looking forward to seeing the two young bulls go up against the experienced pair."

Tigers skipper Robbie Farah added: "Both of those boys gained a lot of experience last year and got through a whole year in first grade."

"I've seen the improvement they've made coming into this year."

"There's no doubt it's going to be a massive challenge for them coming up against the seasoned campaigners Manly have in the front row."

"They won't take a backward step and I'm sure they'll be up for it."

Both Wests and Manly have been hit hard by injuries after the opening round with the Tigers missing Galloway and fullback James Tedesco (knee), while the Sea Eagles will be without internationals Steve Matai (thumb) and Glenn Stewart (finger).

Stewart's absence has robbed the fans of a potentially fiery reunion with former Melbourne forward Adam Blair, with the pair involved in the now the infamous Brookvale Oval fight night towards the end of last season.

Asked if he's spoken with Blair about coming up against the Sea Eagles again and keeping his emotions in check, Sheens said: "I've said nothing to him. We haven't discussed it to be honest, we haven't even discussed Manly as a team yet."

"It's all paper hype. It fizzled out last week and it will fizzle out this week."

"You guys (media) pushed it last year when we were going up there that Manly and us didn't like each other and that fizzled out as well."

"It's just paper talk for you guys to come up with a story. For us it's just football it's business as usual and for Manly it's the same."

"It's a valuable two points and we'll be more focused on that than what happened this time last year."
